July Update - Steam, exhibition and game features

Faraway: On Lost Isles - July Update

Steam & Trailer

It has been silent for a while recently, but now I finally have some news to share. First of all, Faraway is coming to Steam!

Wishlist it here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040010/Faraway_On_Lost_Isles

This has been in the works for a while now, and I am finally glad to share that the store page is public and that a full release of the game is on it's way! As you can see, there is no release date, but I am hoping to get the game finished for release by the end of the year at least. There will also be more more small content updates after release.

Faraway now has a trailer (finally) as well, featuring some new features:

Exhibition

I was lucky enough to get to show off Faraway at an event hosted by the university where I completed my bachelor's degree this year as well. I got good feedback and there were over 20+ people coming to play the game, it was very fun!

Game updates

I've decided to take the publicly available version down from itch as I am planning to instead release a free demo in a month or two.

For people who want to beta test the game on Steam, please contact me directly here on itch.io and tell me why you want to be a part of the testing, what operating system you are using and if you prefer to play with a controller.

For the game content itself, here is what I am currently working on:

Randomly generated water for each island

To make the terrain more random for each playthrough, I am introducing a system that will generate random patches of water on each island. This will also allow players to have more choice for placing waterwheels and such, not being limited to the same ponds each time.

Builder mode

Since the game already supports custom scripting and map making, I want to make this more accessible for the user so they can create their own custom maps to share with the world. This mode will act as a free-build mode where you can build maps, create story-objects such as triggers, signs and NPCs and easily modify the generated objects (trees, stones) at your liking. The tutorial world in the game is already built with this system, and shows off how creative you can be with it.

Other general features

And here is a sneak peek of what i've added so far...much more to come.

  • Apple trees now drop apples, cherry bushes now drop cherries.
  •  You can create a lantern now, which acts as a light source that follows you around so you can walk around in the night time without worrying about the darkness.
  • Swords now work different, and have longer attack ranges than before.
